Don't Pie About It

The recruiting biz can be very competitive and aggressive. Recruiters are working both against each other and the clock to fill roles. But this is not my approach... let me tell you why.

There is enough pie to go around.

There are enough clients and candidates for us all. Hospitality is actually a small, tight knit community. I am speaking daily to people whom I have mutual connections with. Because of this, it's better to work together and not against each other. It is important to build bridges with other recruiters and not walls. Together you can accomplish a lot more and at the end of the day, it's best to service both our client and our candidates to our best ability - even if I don't get to enjoy the entire "pie", I would like at least a piece of it. And that piece, could simply mean referring over a candidate to a "competing" firm.

We all have our strengths in the kitchen.

Have you ever tried Amish Friendship Bread? Well, if you haven't let me enlighten you. Amish friendship bread is a type of bread or cake made from a sourdough starter that is often shared in a manner similar to a chain letter. A few weeks ago, I received this starter from a friend along with a mini loaf of the bread and after trying the bread, I was hooked...I had to make this bread for myself. Each day you have to do something with the starter - you either mix the batter or add additional ingredients. This goes on for 10 days and then at the end of it you use the starter to make your own bread (and save some to pass along to friends). You get the idea? Well, turns out, I am not a bread maker. Ya'll... somehow this bread was hard as a rock on the outside and completely gooey on the inside. Needless to say, just because you put the time and attention into something, doesn't mean it will always turn out how we want. Sometimes, we need to leave it up to our friends (or fellow recruiters) to take on tasks that just don't align with our strengths.

Sometimes you get tired of the same pie. (But not me, I don't ever get tired of pie). Sometimes we work effortlessly on a role, and we just aren't getting somewhere. We simply need a break, but that's not always possible when the position is urgent to fill. Sometimes we need to humble ourselves and realize that maybe we need to step back and have someone else step in. Working with each other and through referrals - we can reach a lot more people!

Somehow, I just got hungry for pie. But I am also hungry to help! Clients and candidates reading this - I can promise you, that if it is in the best interest for YOU, I will not keep all the pie to myself. Filling the role or getting you a job is priority, how it happens logistically doesn't matter to me. And for other recruiters reading this, let's work together, not separately to accomplish the same goal - let's dig into some pie ya'll.
